ROAD TO BRAZIL Mini-Series #4: NAIJAs in BRAZIL wishing the SUPER EAGLES the best of luck – in PORTUGUESE!

16 Jun

It’s D-Day for Nigeria at the FIFA 2014 World Cup, as the Super Eagles kick off their campaign to soar higher than any Nigeria team has ever done at the Big Dance, facing off against Iran tonight! 8pm Naija time!!

As the Eagles prepare for kick-off and the rest of us wait in glorious anticipation, we bring you a special message for Nigerians and the team, from our Portuguese-speaking Nigerians from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), who were on their exchange were in Brazil last year during the Confederations Cup! This the first look we have of them speaking in Portuguese – Enjoy!

Indeed, the OAU students on their year abroad exchange programme in Salvador played a big role in making this project possible, not only as subjects, but also as Portuguese Language interviewers and translators – OAU has been running this exchange programme in Brazil for more than 30 years now!

To get an idea of what it was like to be in Brazil when Nigeria played there at the Confederations Cup last year, and a feel for what the support for the Super Eagles will be like at the World Cup, check out the first three episodes of the mini-series which we’ve been running since the World Cup started!!

ROAD TO BRAZIL Mini-Series #3: Brazilians supported Nigeria at the Confederations Cup!

15 Jun

Here’s PART THREE of the ROAD TO BRAZIL documentary mini-series shot on location in Salvador da Bahia in support of the Super Eagles!

The series features a special group of Nigerians who either live in Brazil or studied there in the year leading up to the World Cup starting today! Indeed, the students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) on their year abroad exchange programme in Salvador played a big role in making this project possible, not only as subjects, but as Portuguese Language interviewers and translators – OAU has been running this exchange programme for more than 30 years now!

To hear LOTS MORE about what it was like to be in Brazil when Nigeria played there at the Confederations Cup last year, and get a feel for what the support for the Super Eagles will be like at the World Cup, stay tuned for EVEN MORE from this mini-series during the Big Dance!

Nigeria’s GLORIA ASUMNU in the 100m at New York leg of Diamond League TONIGHT!

14 Jun

The Diamond League moves to New York tonight, and there will be ONE Nigerian Athlete on show – 100m Sprinter Gloria Asumnu, who is making her first Diamond League appearance of the season! She was part of the Nigeria’s 4x100m team that finished in a commendable 4th place at the first ever World Relays in the Bahamas in May.

Nigeria's 4x100m World Relay 4th-place team (L-R, Blessing Okagbare, Gloria Asumnu, Dominique Duncan, Francesca Okwara)

Nigeria’s 4x100m World Relay 4th-place team
(L-R, Blessing Okagbare, Gloria Asumnu, Dominique Duncan, Francesca Okwara

Asumnu will be attempting to improve on her Season’s best of 11.20s, as she squares up against some solid runners in the 100 metres tonight, not least USA’s Tori Bowie, a long jumper who has stamped her authority on the sprint scene so far this season, with a solid 200m win just ahead of Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare in Eugene, and a 100m win in Rome! She’ll also some up against Jamaica’s Samanthan Henry-Robinson,who is the fastest in the field this season at 11.00s, and their 2008 Olympic Silver Medallist Kerron Stewart. Could we see the first sub-11 second race in the women’s 100 metres this season? Gloria will certainly have to be close to her lifetime best of 11.03s to be in with a chance to win this race!

Nigeria’s 400m Champion and World Relay Bronze Medallist, Regina George, was in line for her second Diamond League appearance of the season, but as of this morning, it seems that she is no longer on the 400m start-list tonight. She is certainly one to watch out for very soon – she bounced back from a disappointing 8th place finish at her first Diamond League appearance this season in Shanghai, to lead Nigeria’s 4x400m Girls to an awesome Bronze medal at the first ever World Relays in the Bahamas last month. What was special about George’s run in that team was a scorching 49.4s split on the second leg, which was the fastest split of any athlete in the race – even faster than Jamaica’s Novlene Williams-Mills split of 49.7s, which the IAAF erroneously reported was the quickest of any athlete (this is what happens when we don’t take ownership of reporting on our athletes – nobody else will)!

Instead, the closest of any sort of Nigerian interest in that race will be in the form of none other than Britain’s 400m World Champion Christine Ohuruogu, making her first appearance Diamond League appearance this season. Despite being a Double World Champion and a GOLD and Silver Medallist at the Olympics, Ohuruogu often peaks very late in the season around the major tournaments, and was not in great form at the World Relays, where Team GB finished a distant 7th place to Nigeria’s 3rd in the 4×400 metres! She will have her work cut out in a strong field which includes USA’s Francena McCorory and Jamaica’s Stephanie Ann McPherson

There are intriguing match-ups all throughout the whole evening, such as Nickel Ashmeade vs Warren Weir vs Alonso Edward in the men’s 200 metres. Double Olympic Silver Medallist Yohan Blake also appearing in the 100 metres – don’t miss it!

Gloria Asumnu will compete in the 100 metres at the New York Diamond League meet TODAY (Jun 14th) at 10.50pm Nigerian Time

SuperSport 9 (DSTV 209) will show the whole meet LIVE on June 14th,  from 9 – 11pm Nigerian Time. Women’s 400m (Ohuruogu) will be at 9.50pm, with the men’s 200m (Ashmeade, Weir) & 100m (Blake) at 10.29pm and 10.35pm respectively!

ROAD TO BRAZIL Mini-Series #2: CONFEDERATION CUP MEMORIES!!

13 Jun

Here’s the 2nd part of our never-seen before documentary mini-series shot on location in Salvador da Bahia in support of the Super Eagles!

The 1st episode yesterday has already received many great responses, not least from a former employee of the Nigerian embassy in Brasilia, who corrected our assertion that these students were pretty much the ONLY people in their age group in Nigeria who are fluent in Portuguese. He said, “There are several other kids in Nigeria, mostly children of Nigerian diplomats and expats, who actually had their elementary and secondary education in Portuguese-speaking countries like Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique etc and speak fluent Portuguese.”

To hear EVEN MORE about what it was like to be in Brazil when Nigeria played there at the Confederations Cup last year, and get a feel for what the support for the Super Eagles will be like at the World Cup, stay tuned for more from this mini-series during the Big Dance! Next episode – on Sunday!

ROAD TO BRAZIL Mini-Series #1: NIGERIANS who live in BRAZIL and speak PORTUGUESE!

12 Jun

It’s the World Cup opening day and for all Nigerians and fans of the Super Eagles, especially those not opportuned to be in Brazil right now, we have a never-seen before documentary mini-series shot on location in Salvador da Bahia in support of the Super Eagles!

The Road to Brazil Mini-Series features a special group of Nigerians who either live in Brazil or studied there in the year leading up to the World Cup starting today! Indeed, the students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) on their year abroad exchange programme in Salvador played a big role in making this project possible, not only as subjects, but as Portuguese Language interviewers and translators – OAU has been running this exchange programme for more than 30 years now, and these students stand out as being pretty much the ONLY people in their age group in Nigeria who are fluent in Portuguese!

To get an idea of what it was like to be in Brazil when Nigeria played there at the Confederations Cup last year, and a feel for what the support for the Super Eagles will be like at the World Cup, watch out for more from this mini-series during the big dance. The next part will be released tomorrow – stay tuned!

Norway’s OKPARAEBO, Bahrain’s ADEKOYA & Britain’s IDOWU in Olso Diamond League TONIGHT

11 Jun

While there is no direct Nigerian interest in the Olso Diamond League (ExxonMobil Bislett Games) tonight, as there are no athletes representing Nigeria competing, there are still plenty of reasons to tune in to catch all the action. For starters, the poster-girl for Norwegian Athletics, Ezinne Okparaebo, whom we profiled yesterday, will be going in the 100 metres, which she won at this meet 2 years ago with a time of 11.31 seconds. Her season’s best (SB) is 11.25s, but she may have to go close to her PB of 11.10s to win tonight, with Jamaica’s Aileen Bailey (SB: 11.16s) and USA’s  Lekeisha Lawson (SB: 11.17s) in the race. Look out also for Team GB’s Jodie Williams (SB: 11.19s) and Asha Philip (SB: 11.20s).

Perhaps the most intriguing match up from a Nigerian perspective will involve the return of Kemi Adekoya in her second Diamond League race in the 400 metre hurdles for BAHRAIN, after she blew the field away in Doha (from Lane 1) with a new national record (NR) of 54.59s for her new country. She will be up against the in-form Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica, who leads the Diamond League standings in the event, after setting a world leading time of 53.97s in Rome last week! Adekoya beat Spencer by nearly half a second in that race in Doha, but that was when her threat was unknown to her more illustrious competitors. Now she will likely have to run another massive PB and NR, perhaps below 54 seconds, to claim victory against Spencer, who has completely dominated the field in her absence!

Finally, Britain’s Phillips Idowu will be returning in the Triple Jump after a long absence from the Diamond League – his season’s best of 16.99 metres is some way below his lifetime best of 17.81m set in 2010. He will certainly have to jump well beyond 17 metres to win in a stacked Triple Jump field – USA’s 2012 Olympic Gold & Silver Medallists Christian Taylor and Will Claye, as well as the Cubans Ernesto Revé and 16-year old Lázaro Martinez have all jumped well over 17 metres this season, as has Russia’s 2014 World Indoor Champion Lyukman Adams (who just happens to have a Nigerian father)!

So there you have it – at least FOUR athletes linked to Nigeria will be competing in Oslo tonight, but no athletes representing Nigeria involved. Make of that what you will! In other intriguing match-ups involving African athletes, Cote d’Ivoire’s Murielle Ahouré will go up against USA’s Olympic GOLD medallist, Alyson Felix in the Women’s 200 metres, while Botswana’s Amantle Montsho will be trying to overhaul Jamaica’s Novlene Williams-Mills, who has dominated the Women’s 400 metres so far this season.

Wrapping up the evening is the Men’s 100 metres, where the Gambian-born Norwegian, Jaysuma Saidy Ndure, who will have plenty of home support as he faces a field which includes France’s Jimmy Vicaut (SB: 9.95s), Trinidad’s in-form 2008 Olympic Silver Medallist, Richard Thompson (SB: 9.95s) and South Africa’s Simon Magakwe, Africa’s fastest man this season and the only one to break 10 seconds so far, with 9.98 seconds! The evergreen 2003 World Champion Kim Collins of St Kitt’s and Nevis, and Team GB’s  World Indoor Champion Richard Kilty, Adam Gemili and Danny Talbot make up the rest of 100 metre line-up!

SuperSport 9 (DSTV 209) will show the Exxon Mobil Bislett Games (Oslo Diamond League) LIVE TONIGHT from 7 – 9pm Nigerian Time, repeated on SS7 from 11pm – 1am! Select event timings as follows:

Men’s Triple Jump (Idowu & Adams vs USA & Cuba) starts at 6pm (highlights throughout live show)

Women’s 400m Hurdles (Adekoya vs Spencer) – 7:05pm

Women’s 400m (Montsho vs Williams-Mills) – 7:38pm

Women’s 100m (Okaparaebo) – 7:48pm

Women’s 200m (Ahouré vs Felix) – 8:28pm

Men’s 100m (Ndure & Magakwe vs Thompson) – 8:50pm

Athlete Profile: Ezinne Okparaebo, The Poster Girl for Norwegian Athletics!

10 Jun

Ezinne Okparaebo is yet another athlete of Nigerian origin who has found fame and fortune running for the colours of her adopted country. As an athlete, Okparaebo’s fame in Norway is surpassed perhaps only by Gambian-born Jaysuma Saidy Ndure who has PBs of 9.99s & 19.89s  in the 100 & 200 metres respectively. Ezinne moved from Nigeria to Norway at the age of 9, and became the fastest Norwegian in history when she won the 100 metres at the Diamond League meet in Olso in 2012 in a time of 11.31s. A couple of months later, she lowered that time even further to 11.10s in the 100m Semi-Finals at the London 2012 Olympics. She is also the Norwegian 200 metre record holder, after running 23.30s twice in 2012!

Okparaebo in the Norwegian papers...

Okparaebo in the Norwegian papers…

Assuming Okparaebo had represented Nigeria, her time of 11.10s would not place her in Nigeria’s All-time Top 5 list in the 100 metres (Okagbare, Ajunwa, Alozie, Onyali, Osayomi) – she will have to run sub-11 to get in the mix – but she’d certainly be up there with Okagbare and Gloria Asumnu in Nigeria’s current relay team. But what sets this “Track Chick” apart from any athlete that has ever represented Nigeria (including Okagbare as Africa’s fastest woman ever) is her complete marketability. The Puma-sponsored Athlete is the poster child for Norwegian Athletics, and her stunning good looks and eye for fashion mean that she would be as comfortable on the cover of Vogue or Sports Illustrated as she is on the track. Even if you’re not Norwegian, you can’t help but get excited about this short rap video, which encapsulates Ezinne’s career so far:

“Okparaebo from Imo to Oslo; fabulous, make fashion flow on the track…”

Imagine the possibilities if Nigeria could market our own athletes in similar fashion and celebrate their accomplishments at each turn? By now Blessing Okagbare should have a whole movie about her! Okparaebo is a household name and role model for the younger generation in Norway, and in 2012 she spoke about getting used to seeing her image on billboards and buses all over Oslo – at 26, she’s at the mid-point of her Athletics career, so let’s keep tabs on her and hope she can eventually run sub 11 seconds, as the rapper in this video predicts! If that happens, her legend in Norway is bound to rise even further!

Did anyone else notice the Christ lyrics towards the end of the rap? According to Wikipedia,  Okparaebo is a member of the Norwegian Christian Sports Organization KRIK –  Kristen Idrettskontakt (literally meaning ‘Christian Sports Contact’) – which has the goal of combining the Christian faith with the joy of sport. It is no wonder then that she is considered such a role model for the youth in Norway – the youth which includes a certain Chiamaka Okparaebo, her 20-year old younger sister who is an up and coming Triple Jumper in Norway!

As Britain’s CHIJINDU UJAH breaks 10 seconds, we ask – WHY AREN’T NIGERIANS DOING THE SAME?

9 Jun

20-year old Chijindu Ujah in his first season running as a senior, sprinted to prominence last night in Holland, clocking 9.96s in the 100 metres, making him only the FIFTH British Athlete to go under 10 seconds, and moving him straight up to third in the British all-time list, behind only Linford Christie (9.87s) and James Dasaolu (9.91s). He finished second in the race to Trinidad & Tobago’s Richard Thompson, the Silver medallist  from the Beijing 2008 Olympics, who won the race in 9.95s:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL-tQTRTXOs

This is another massive personal best from the virtually unknown British youngster, whom we reported had brought his PB down from 10.26s to 10.14s at the Manchester Great CityGames only last month. Now he has truly announced his arrival on the big stage, and he has British commentators salivating on the resurgence of British sprinting. Ujah is yet another athlete born to parents of Nigerian descent but who was born and bred in Britain, after James Dasaolu shot to 2nd in the British all-time list last year, with an incredible 9.91s run at the British Championships! Ujah is coached by Jonas Tawia-Dodoo, and his training partners include Long Jump Olympic Champion Greg Rutherford, and a couple of other youngsters of Nigerian and Ghanaian descent, Deji Tobias and Sean Safo-Antwi!

Here’s the obvious question for Nigerians – WHY is there a trend for Nigerian-born or Nigerian-origin athletes to excel at Sprinting everywhere but Nigeria? Indeed, we just reported this weekend that Nigerians are no longer the fastest people in Africa, even though we hold 7 of the top 9 positions in Africa’s all-time list. Interestingly, the Africa is not the only continent where Nigerians BORN and RAISED in NIGERIA are the Record Holders:

European 100 metre all-time list (Top 7):

1. Francis Obikwelu, 9.86s (POR) – he ran for Nigeria until Sydney 2000 and switched to Portugal in 2001, setting this European Record by winning the Olympic Silver medal at Athens 2004!

2. Linford Christie, 9.87s (GBR)

3. Churandy Martina, 9.91s (NED)

3. James Dasaolu, 9.91s (GBR) – Nigerian descent

5. Christophe Lemaitre, 9.92s (FRA) – the only white athlete who’s ever run under 10 seconds!

6. Jimmy Vicaut, 9.95s (FRA)

7. Chijindu Ujah, 9.96s (GBR) – Nigerian descent

Asian 100 metre all-time list (Top 3):

1. Samuel Francis, 9.99s (QAT) – born and raised in Nigeria – switched to Qatar in 2007, and became the 100m Asian Record Holder that same year!

2. Koji Ito, 10.00s (JPN)

2. Peimeng Zhang, 10.00s (CHN)

“There are currently over 72 million young people in the country. Thus, youth, more than oil, could be Nigeria’s asset in the following decades” – askGEJ.com

Indeed, Nigeria has over 100 million people younger than 25, and this represents an ample talent pool to dominate a sport that is very empirical, a sport where your success does not directly depend on the performance of others. Nigeria has always had a glorious opportunity to dominate Athletics in a way that only the USA ever has, but apparently everyone else in the Athletics world seems to know this, apart from Nigerians! Leading Sports Geneticist, Dr Yannis Pitsiladis has spoken profusely about the possibilities of Nigeria’s Athletics, as has Bahamian Athletics Executive, Harrison Petty, in the run-up to the 1st ever World Relay Championships in May!

It is also widely known that Nigeria was the nation that America feared the most in the nineties – Carl Lewis was very vocal that the USA should stop funding other countries’ Olympic teams (read: Nigeria) through handing them US Collegiate Scholarships en-masse. In fact, it had been predicted that Nigeria would be the next Track & Field superpower to emerge, but that turned out to be the little Island of Jamaica, population: 3 million (all descended from West Africa, by the way). Jamaica’s rise over the last 15 years has been down to a deliberate private sector effort in Jamaica, by Jamaicans, to produce the world’s best sprinters.

So how come not a single person or company in a country of 170 million people realises that there is the opportunity of a lifetime to train Athletes IN Nigeria, and get them firing on all cylinders against the best in the world? Athletics is the one sport, more than any other in the world, where the greatest battle is the one against oneself – if Nigerians as a people can come together and win the battle against the cultural and economic challenges that hinder real progress in producing World-Class athletes in Nigeria, then global domination in Track & Field beckons!

Can the Super Eagles fly against Argentina at the World Cup?!?

8 Jun

Now that the series of pre-World Cup friendlies for the Super Eagles are over, it’s time to answer the question on every Nigerians lips: How well can they do at the the Big Dance? The Super Eagles are taking less than flattering form into the World Cup starting on Thursday – after an encouraging 2-2 draw with Scotland and a lacklustre goalless draw with Greece, The Eagles wrapped up their pre-World Cup friendlies with an uninspiring 2-1 loss to USA, in a performance that is already sending some Super Eagles fans into panic, and forcing others to adjust their expectations of the team – can we even make it out of the group? Should the less than stellar pre-World Cup form be a source of worry?

Well, yes and no, but more no than yes…yes, it is true that there is a gulf in class between Nigeria’s starting eleven and some of the bench players – strength in depth is needed to go beyond the World Cup Quarter-Finals, if the team can even make it that far. It is also true that the squad continues to be hampered by injuries to 1st team players – both Ahmed Musa and Kenneth Omeruo sat out the USA game due to injury concerns, while 1st-choice left back Uwa Echiejile has been ruled out altogether after pulling up with a muscle injury against Greece.

The only consolation Nigeria fans will be able to take from the loss of Echiejile is the return of CHAN MVP, Ejike Uzoenyi, to the team. Despite not being a like-for-like swap (a left-sided attacking midfielder replacing a left back), if Uzoenyi could re-enact any of the form that saw him score 3 incredible goals at this year’s CHAN, then he could prove to be a super-sub that might be able to produce something out of nothing for Nigeria! It remains to be seen whether he will even get a chance, as it would seem he is currently below the likes of Moses, Musa and even Babatunde and Uchebo in the pecking order on the wings!

So why should we not be TOO worried about Nigeria’s less than ideal build up to Brazil? Well, first of all, it is important to note that goal of friendlies is not necessarily to win them – Coach Stephen Keshi would have been more concerned about making sure his players stay injury-free. Only the match against Greece gave us any insight into what Keshi’s starting eleven at the World Cup is going to be. The Scotland match was a last chance for the fringe players to impress, while the USA match will have helped Keshi answer any lingering questions he may have had – can Yobo still lead this team from the start of matches, or can Ameobi lead the line alone upfront? The answer to both those questions based on the USA game would likely be NO, so barring injury, expect Omeruo to return to the starting line-up against Iran, while Emenike’s lively cameo against USA showed that he is still Nigeria’s No. 1 forward!

What’s most important for Nigerians and the team right now is to KEEP CALM. Just like at the African Cup of Nations last year, the Eagles seem to play best when the least is expected of them, when their backs are against the wall. Let’s also not forget that we have had far worse World Cup preparations in the past – in 1998, after losing consecutive friendlies to Germany, Yugoslavia and Holland to a total aggregate score of 9-1, we went on to beat Spain and Bulgaria in our first two World Cup matches and top our group. It was only when the team became overconfident and were already looking forward to a possible quarter-final clash against Brazil, that they were unceremoniously thrashed by Denmark in the 2nd Round!

This time around, they will know that the first game against Iran is a must-win game, to have any chance of progression to the second round, and they will get that job done. Bosnia in contrast has had a very strong build-up, including friendly victories against Cote d’Ivoire and Mexico, so there is no chance that Keshi and his team will underestimate them – avoiding defeat in that game will be critical for our chances for 2nd round progression. Going into the 3rd game against Argentina without needing a result would be ideal, but a lot will depend on if Argentina still needs a result by then to progress – ideally they will not and rest some key players!

Sergio Aguero dazzling 4 Nigerian players at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Argentina won that game 1-0

Sergio Aguero dazzling 4 Nigerian players at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Argentina won that game 1-0

Nigeria has played Argentina in 3 of the 4 World Cups that the Super Eagles have appeared in, losing narrowly each time (2-1, to Claudio Cannigia goals at USA ’94, 1-0 to a Gabriel Batistuta header at Japan/Korea ’02, and 1-0 to a Gabriel Heinze header at South Africa 2010). Nigeria is well overdue a shock win against our old foes at the World Cup! So, can Nigeria beat the likes of Argentina and indeed the hosts Brazil, or is that just a pipe dream? Where will our support come from in Brazil? Here’s what Brazilian and Argentinian fans had to say about Nigeria’s chances, in Salvador just before World Cup Draw was made there in December – this video also features former Nigeria International Richard Owubokiri, who lives in Salvador – Enjoy!

If this is any indication of the reception that the Super Eagles should expect in Brazil, then we can count on some “home” support for the team even if there aren’t many Nigerians who can make the trip to Brazil to watch the matches lives – it’s just a pity that regardless of our progression, Nigeria will NOT play in the North-East of Brazil, particularly Salvador, where the links to Nigerian cuisine and culture and indeed the Yoruba language are incredibly apparent!
